Day 16 - Reflections Part 3 Whose Mirror are you trying to see yourself Reflected Through?

Updated: Dec 1, 2022

Many look in the mirrors that the world holds up to them. They hope for a glimpse of their beauty but sadly often only catch a view of ugliness.

Each day, everyone goes out searching to discover a little more about who they are and why they are here. However, they rarely go inside. They rarely ask the one who loved them into life and being to reflect back to them how he sees them. If they did, they would walk away each and every time having gained a little glimpse of the beauty and worth that they had never been able to see before.

For a long time, it might be hard to hear and see oneself in this new mirror, as it seems to be reflecting back a very different person to the one the world has told us we are. And therefore, for a long time, we continue to ignore this version of ourselves and believe the lies and half truths told by many others who have not always had our best intentions at heart.

And then one day, this prince of kindness tells us that we are a princess. Well, we almost fall off our chair laughing because we believe ourselves to be a rat.

“How can I be a princess?” one asks.

“Because I am a King and you are my child which must mean that you are a princess.”

“But I don’t feel or act like a princess.”

“Then I must help you to discover this truth and help you bury the rat deep beneath the ground.”

When one has believed oneself to be of little or no worth, it is almost impossible at first to believe that to the King of heaven we are his precious child who he wants to restore so that she can once more see herself as God created her to be. This ability to accept this as truth, can take an age to sink in, but when it does, everything changes.

You no longer need others to tell you that you are of worth. You no longer look to them to see your reflection. You believe your heavenly Father and are each day delighted at the beauty he reveals to you of how he sees you, loves you and accepts you.

Of course, every now and then we forget to pick up this mirror and go back to trying to see our reflection through the world’s mirrors. However, these can never be true reflections, for they cannot see us as he does. They see us only through a glass mirror dimly. They are not on our path and can’t see or understand what’s ahead. Only he does.

So, each day, visit the King and say, “Father, show me how you see me today. Help me see myself through your eyes and not the mirrors of others. And he will show us. But first we have to make space and time for this encounter. We need to come within our room and shut our door and allow him to speak and make sure we give him the time to listen.

No one can love us more than the one who loved and created us into being. No one knows us as he does. No one sees our beauty in the same way as he does. Which loving parent ever looks at the dirt upon their child’s body? They know that dirt can come off easily in the bath. They look beyond the superficial and see the heart of the child and delight in the privilege of having this incredibly unique and special individual in their life.

And which child, if asking for a sweet, would continue to take bitter ones from strangers when they have a whole sweet shop to themselves which is always open and never shuts.

Reflection is important, but take care about whose mirror you are trying to see yourself reflected through.

Sit quietly, alone, somewhere you feel at peace and won’t be disturbed. Allow time to listen to God. Come before him and say, “Father, show me how you see me today. Help me see myself through your eyes, the eyes of love and not through the mirrors of others.”

You may get a picture or a word or a place or song words or a piece of music or part of a film. Look for why he has given you this, for there will be something of great worth he wants to share with you about an aspect of you that he treasures.

Try and repeat this exercise daily for a week and write here all the images you had. If you get anything negative, it will not be from God.
