Day 6 The Uniqueness of a Fingerprint

fingerprint.jpeg

Who made you?  Who designed who you could become?  Who chose the colour of your eyes?  Who counted how many hairs there would be on your scalp?  Who planted the desire for life within you, so that however hard or difficult or even terrible life’s circumstances might be, you would still desire to stay alive?  Where does your conscience come from which helps you to discern what is right, good and proper and that which is bad or poor or dishonourable?  Why aren’t you like anyone else on the planet, even down to individually unique fingerprints?

Do you know that every snow flake’s design too is unique.  What does that tell you?  It tells you that being unique is very important to God.  He could have made a ‘batch’ of people who all look alike.  It would have been so much easier to do.

Yet instead, the God of the universe, who created billions of galaxies and billions more which we can’t even begin to grasp understanding with the finiteness of our brain, not only cares about the huge big picture, but so too the tiniest of details.  That dedication to individuality takes huge love and patience.  Yet it is one of the lessons that he longs for us to hear.

You have been wonderfully and uniquely designed and created by God, even down to the number of hairs on your head and your thumb print.

He knows that in the same way as we have unique fingerprints, we also have something that only we can bring and leave behind in this world.  Why would he make you uniquely different and then turn to ‘batch thinking’ and group you together with everyone else, as if on a factory line, churning out the same products.  No, you have something utterly and uniquely incredibly wonderful which you and you alone have been designed to create and leave behind in this world.  In the same way as God has uniquely created you, he calls you too to be a creator of something that no other person on the planet can make.

Each child who comes into this world, carries the DNA of their mother and father.  He too wants us to create unique children who will bless the world in which he will be their father and we will be their mother.  This child is not a physical child but a spiritual child, whose life will in some way develop, grow and eventually bless mankind and womankind in a way not achievable through any other child.

However, before there can be spiritual children, one needs to understand what these are.  They are children who will bring eternal life and truth to this world, beyond the way this world operates and thinks.

What do spiritual children look like?  They might be songs or poems or works of art.  They might be compositions or stories or words of life.  Whatever they will be, they will always bless the world with new life and new ways of seeing or understanding.  They will reveal deep truths needed as bread is needed to survive and grow.

Before that can happen, there has to be a relationship between us and the one who created us.  For how can we tell any about our father if we have not met him yet?  And so begins the long journey to grow in relationship with someone or something so much bigger and more magnificent then we could ever imagine.  However, like all relationships, this takes time and sometimes a very long time.

Yet God never ever gives up on us.  He walks at our pace.  He sits when we need to rest and urges us on when our spirits are low.  He is not like our earthly fathers, flawed and broken.  He is the perfect father. Yet often we cannot begin to believe that a perfect father exists, because we have been so hurt and damaged by our earthly father.  That is why he allows us the years needed to get to know him as he truly is and to learn how to not project our experiences and losses from our earthly father onto him.

So why does he use the word father if that word holds negative connotations to us? Couldn’t he call himself something else which would help us warm to him better?

Yet he chooses the word Father because he knows that when you discover his true heart, you too will discover you are his child who could not be loved or adored more by any other single person you might ever meet.  You will also discover that he can be the port in the storm whose arms you can always run into, whatever you are experiencing and however you are feeling.  In those arms you will find rest for your soul, acceptance and unconditional love.  Surely there can be no better place to discover therefore than the heart of this God, your heavenly Father?

And that is the journey he will take you on, a journey into his heart.  Once you know him, it won’t matter what others tell you about who or what he is, for you will know him for yourself. That place of knowing will be like a strong tower you can find shelter within during the storms of life.  It will be like a solid rock, a place of firm foundation, upon which you can build the house and home of your life.

That is where your travels will take you.  To truth.  To freedom.  To love.  To acceptance.  And finally, to your true meaning and purpose and the thumbprint that you and you alone will be able to leave upon this world.  In the same way as skeletons of creatures can be found in the sediment laid down in the past and now preserved in rocks, your life too will be found one day and the eternal truths you were able to birth into this world will be rediscovered and celebrated.

However, that can only happen if you search for the jewels of eternal significance that can only be discovered on your walk with God, wherever he chooses to take you.

Prayer

Giver of Life,

Thank you that you are the God who created the billions of galaxies in the universe, yet still found time to count the hairs on my head.

Thank you that you not only care about the big things but also the tiny miniscule things in our lives.

Help me to know how and where I can best leave my unique individual fingerprint upon this world, in order that I can leave behind something of worth which will bless both this world and you, my Father.

I have struggled getting to know you as Father as I have imprinted so many of my earthly father’s characteristics upon you which has led me to be (put here what applies to you,) fearful of you and worried that I will be punished and that I will not be good enough and be a disappointment to you.

Yet I now know your heart ,which always loves and accepts me as I am. Help me to draw ever nearer to the true you and leave behind my false ideas and images of you.

Please help everyone to be released from the lies which may have been spoken over their lives about their worth and dignity and instead begin to speak words of life and truth into them so that each and every person might know just how precious they are to you.

Remind them Father that you are their Father who is both proud and delighted in them and will do anything to help them grow into the fingerprint of life which they alone can leave behind. Help us to not be embarrassed by our individuality but be grateful that we are as important to you as one of the planets in the night sky. You care about us the same.

Thank you,

Amen.
