Port in the Storm
A Refuge in Troubled Times
Day 5 Held Within the Womb

Another way of looking at our search for God is to recognise that we already have him, for we are held within the womb of God.

Can a child describe their mother from within the womb holding them? They cannot, for they live in two very different worlds. Yet nevertheless, the child is held and nurtured and taken great care of in the womb.

The child’s task is to allow itself to grow into who God created them to be. This is a very natural process, where certain parts develop first and then as the weeks become months, those parts become fully formed.

This time within the womb is not about the life that can be found there, but about preparing them for when they leave the safety of this warm and safe cocoon and enter into a new world.
It is only then, once born, that they will see their mother God face to face and be held and loved in a way unknowable from the confines of the womb.

The eyes were never developing in order to see within this world of the womb. Nor the ears, nor the other senses like taste, touch and smell. Everything was and is about the life to come.
This womb was never intended as a scary place. Think about it, no one can get to destroy you, for first they would need to destroy the God you live within and that is not possible.

It is a time to develop, to grow in so many ways which will prepare you for the next life, the real life. One can grow physically, but equally as important and necessary is our growth in eternal things like truth, wisdom, patience, kindness, love, acceptance, forgiveness and other blessings which will be the currency used in this next life. Turning up at heaven’s door without these currencies will mean that we will find it difficult to fit in there or belong and we might need to be taken on a different journey to help us find these eternal treasures.

So, as you go on your search for God, understand that in the same way as a child in the womb cannot see or describe their mother, you too may never be able to describe God in words. All you can hear is her heartbeat, that steady, strong beat telling you not to be afraid as you are being held by love and into the arms of love you will one day be delivered by the midwife of life’s circumstances.

Allow yourself to be held and learn to listen for and discern that heartbeat of God, each and every day.

Prayer

Giver of Life,

Thank you that you are my mother, holding and taking care of me within your womb.
It is very dark in here and sometimes I so desperately want to know what is going on and try and work everything out in order to feel more in control.

Yet I know that all you ask of me is to trust the one holding me, feeding and nourishing me with the things I need in order to grow strong and healthy and grow into all I will become. Help me to trust you in this process and not to fight it or run away from it.

Thank you that there is no safer place to be, than being held in your eternal warm waters, waiting for the time when I will see you face to face and finally be held in your arms.
Thank you, Mother God, for loving me and never leaving my side.

Amen.
